Frieze Masters 2023 – London
From Paris to Mexico, all Western countries imported Chinese porcelain and began producing their own "porcelain," most often referring to tin-glazed ceramics painted with blue motifs, directly or indirectly inspired by Chinese porcelain from the Wanli to Kangxi periods.
The exhibition covers the period from 1500 to 1700, a time of great prosperity across Europe, with a particular focus on the 17th century, which was regarded as a Golden Age by the Dutch, the Grand Siècle by the French, and part of the Siglo de Oro by the Spanish.
While museum exhibitions often present these productions in isolation, here we aim to provide an overview of the impact of the massive importation of Chinese porcelain into the West. This is a unique opportunity to admire, study, and compare the production of blue-and-
white tin-glazed ceramics, inspired by Chinese porcelain, made around the world.
